Orthopaedic Surgery for Dogs and Cats

Orthopaedic conditions can affect comfort, movement and quality of life. At BVRS, we provide referral-based orthopaedic surgery for dogs and cats, working closely with pet owners and primary care veterinarians to support each patient from assessment through recovery.

Our independent specialist referral service supports patients across Canberra, the ACT and surrounding regions.

Orthopaedic Conditions and Procedures

Orthopaedic surgery may be recommended for pets with injuries or conditions affecting the bones, joints, ligaments or wider musculoskeletal system. Services may include:

  • TPLO / cruciate repair
  • Luxating patella surgery
  • Fracture repair
  • Arthroscopy
  • Surgical support for selected mobility concerns
  • Ligament repair
  • Arthrodesis
  • Angular limb deformity surgery
  • Surgery for joint dysplasia
  • Surgery for musculo-tendon injuries and disorders

Each case is carefully reviewed so the surgical plan is appropriate for the patient’s diagnosis, health, activity level and recovery needs.

TPLO and Cruciate Repair

Cruciate ligament injuries are a common cause of lameness and mobility changes in dogs. TPLO surgery or another cruciate repair approach may be recommended depending on the patient’s needs.

Our team provides clear guidance about the recommended procedure, recovery expectations and post-operative care, while keeping your referring veterinarian informed.

Luxating Patella

Luxating patella, also known as medial patellar luxation or MPL, can cause skipping lameness, discomfort and progressive osteoarthritis. For some pets, surgery may be recommended to improve alignment, preserve articular cartilage and slow progression of osteoarthritis.

BVRS provides orthopaedic surgical planning with a focus on personalised care and clear communication.

Fracture Repair

Fracture repair may be required when a broken bone needs surgical stabilisation. All BVRS veterinarians are members of the AO VET community and use DePuy Synthes power tools and implants. Fractures can be repaired using open or minimally invasive approaches, depending on the case.

Orthopaedic surgery recovery is supported by Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation to help patients recover strength, comfort and mobility after surgery.

Orthopaedic Care With Communication and Continuity

When you are referred to us, you can count on specialist orthopaedic care, continuity and close collaboration. Our priority is to keep pet owners fully informed about the treatment plan while ensuring referring veterinarians receive timely updates on their patients.

Our surgical team has a wealth of clinical experience in treating a broad range of injuries and conditions. We utilise advanced techniques, including arthroscopy (keyhole) for diagnosing and treating intra-articular joint diseases.

From the initial referral to post-operative recovery, we are dedicated to delivering professional, personalised, and seamlessly coordinated care.
